People take photos everyday, yes; but photographers make photographs. And most of those images on Facebook, Instagram, and Chat are more pixt than picture. That is to say, pixting is to photography as texting is to literature. (link to another Medium article) To suggest that “staged” events are equivalent to documenting them is contradictory and out of touch with the reality of being a photogapher — or a fine sports photojournalist like Michael Zagaris.
To give you two examples, works of both portraiture and still-life are staged. In fact, one might say they are contrived in the best sense of the word. But those admirable arts are quite different from the documentation of events.
